OUR HISTORY

Set among the tall cypress and lazy blue water, it is easy to see why Newbegunland is a magnet to those looking for tranquility and peace. But did you know that Newbegunland was once the site of the former "ligher than air" Weeksville Naval Air Station. The first steel blimp hangar was built in 1941 forthe US Navy.  A second wooden hanger was added in 1943. As of 1944 the station had 886 officers and enlisted personnel and covered 822 acres with 10 miles of railroad track!  Today the original steel hanger is still in use by TCOM.  The only reminents of the wooden hangar are the pillars having succumbed to a fire in 1995.
